Applying for Social Security benefits no longer requires you to drive to your local Social Security office or wait for an appointment with a Social Security representative. Did you know? You can now apply for Social Security benefits online. An online application is made available for you to apply in the comfort of your own home or any location that is convenient for you at any time. Before you start, here are the basics to applying online for Social Security benefits.

Types of Benefits You Can Apply for Online

  • Retirement or Spouse’s Benefits – Online applications are available for retirement or spouse’s benefits if you are at least 61 years and 9 months old and want your benefits to start no more than four months in the future. Additionally, your application for benefits will include Medicare if you are almost 65. If you do not want your retirement benefits to start, but you are almost 65, then you can simply apply online for Medicare.

  • Disability Benefits – Online applications are also available for disability benefits if you are 18 or older.

You will need to be able to provide information about your medical, work and education history to be eligible for determination on whether or not you are qualify to receive Social Security benefits.

What You’ll Need to Apply Online

To apply for retirement or spouse’s benefits, you will need the following:

  • Your Social Security number

  • DOB

  • Place of birth

  • If you are married or divorced, you will need the Social Security number and the date of birth or age of your current or former spouse(s).

  • You will also need to know the dates and places of marriage and the dates of divorce or death (if applicable).

  • If you have unmarried children under the age of 18, you will need to provide their names.

  • Additional information about your employment and legal documents will need to be provided.

For Disability Benefits

To apply for disability benefits, you will need the following:

  • Your Social Security number

  • DOB

  • Place of birth

  • Date you became unable to work due to injuries or illnesses

  • Additional information about your employment and legal documents will need to be provided.
