How to Apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

Applying for Social Security Disability Insurance involves gathering your documentation, understanding the process, and submitting a complete application. Here’s a step-by-step overview to help you get started. Before you begin, collect the information you’ll need. This includes your Social Security number, birth certificate or proof of age, medical records and the contact information for all treating providers, a complete work history for the past 15 years, and recent W-2s or tax records if you were self-employed.

Having this ready before you start reduces the chance of gaps in your application. You have three ways to apply. Online at ssa.gov is the most convenient option and allows you to save and return to your application. By phone at 1-800-772-1213, where an SSA representative will assist you. Or in person at your local Social Security office, which you can locate through ssa.gov. During the application, you’ll describe your medical conditions, how they affect your ability to work, your work history, and why you stopped working.

Be as specific and thorough as possible — vague or incomplete answers are a common cause of unnecessary delays and denials. After submission, your case goes to Michigan’s Disability Determination Services for an initial review. This typically takes three to six months. DDS may contact you for additional records or schedule a consultative examination. Responding promptly to any requests keeps your case moving.

If your application is denied, you have 60 days to file an appeal. Don’t let that deadline pass — missing it can require starting over from the beginning. Working with an attorney before you apply can help ensure your application is as strong as possible.
