Key Evidence That Strengthens an SSDI Application

A strong SSDI claim is built on documentation. While medical records form the core of any application, there are several additional types of evidence that can meaningfully strengthen your case. Knowing what to gather before you apply can make a significant difference in the outcome. Medical records from all treating providers should be as current and complete as possible. This includes primary care physician notes, specialist evaluations, therapy records, diagnostic test results, and any hospital records related to your condition.

The more thoroughly your records reflect ongoing symptoms and treatment, the stronger your medical foundation. A residual functional capacity (RFC) assessment completed by your treating physician is among the most valuable documents in an SSDI claim. This form describes specifically what you can and cannot do — how long you can sit, stand, or walk, what you can lift, and whether you have cognitive or social limitations.

An RFC completed by a doctor who knows your history carries more weight than a one-time evaluation by an SSA-selected examiner. Work history documentation helps the SSA understand what you did before you became disabled and whether you can return to that work. A detailed description of your past jobs — including physical demands, required skills, and the reason you stopped working — gives decision makers important context.

A personal function report is a form the SSA provides during the application process. Completing it carefully and thoroughly, with specific examples of how your condition affects daily activities, adds important detail to your claim. Third-party statements from family members, friends, or former coworkers who have observed your limitations can provide supporting context. These statements describe what others have witnessed about how your condition affects your ability to function.
