The Role of Medical Evidence in an SSI Claim in Michigan

Medical evidence is essential to an SSI claim. While you don’t need to have a specific doctor formally endorse your application, the SSA requires documented proof of a qualifying disability — and that documentation must come from acceptable medical sources. Understanding what’s needed can help you prepare a stronger claim from the start. The SSA accepts evidence from licensed physicians, psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, and other qualified healthcare providers.

Records from treating physicians who have an ongoing relationship with you carry particular weight because they reflect your condition over time, not just at a single point. At a minimum, your records should document your diagnosis or diagnoses, the severity of your condition, your treatment history and response to treatment, and — most importantly — how your condition limits your ability to function in daily life and in a work setting.

The SSA is evaluating functional limitations, not just a diagnosis, so records that describe what you cannot do are more valuable than records that simply confirm a condition exists. If your treating providers have limited documentation of your functional limitations, it may be worth discussing with them directly. Asking your doctor to complete a functional capacity form or provide a detailed letter describing your limitations can significantly strengthen your claim.

In some cases, the SSA will arrange a consultative examination (CE) with an independent physician if they determine that existing records are insufficient. Attending this exam is important — skipping it can result in a denial based on lack of medical evidence. For applicants with mental health conditions, records from therapists, psychiatrists, or counselors are equally important.

Mental health documentation should reflect how your condition affects your ability to concentrate, interact with others, follow instructions, and maintain a regular schedule.
